Leaping Dragon Heritage Trail

We explored the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail not too far from our home in Fanling. Where you see us standing in an old doorway, that is the entrance to a centuries-old village enclosed within high brick walls. One clan lived in the village which included a temple for worship, a guard tower for defence, and multiple dwellings for extended family. Some of the dwellings are falling into decay while others have been repaired and expanded to accommodate new families of today. The temple includes a place for incense burning (notice the beehive shaped incense hanging from the ceiling next to the big round lanterns in one temple) and also shelves for ancestral tablets which serve somewhat the same purpose as our tombstones do. The two iron bells you see in one temple were cast to placate the gods on behalf of the young men who were to complete examinations for further learning. One was cast in 1695 and the other in 1700. It was very interesting to see these ancient buildings intermingled with some newer apartment buildings in the area.
